How to prepare for a partner or acro yoga photo shoot
How about I show you? I’m not much of an editor but my yoga homie and acro yoga partner Joy Scola is quite the yoga teacher and handy with the video camera. We had a partner yoga shoot scheduled where we were going to create some of those insta-worthy awesome duo poses.
Proper preparation prevents poor performance – old British army saying
Due to the fact we had a 4 hour shoot at a nice studio, planning things out before hand seemed wise. We individually researched pictures and themes we wanted to portray before meeting up. Then we tried some of the amazing instagram yogis-on-a-beach thing and realized a more attainable version was just as fun, eye catching, and aesthetically pleasing.
Comparison is the killer of joy
Do NOT compare yourself, try to be the best version of yourself.
I could have criticized myself for being “fuller” than my counterpart, but instead I decided to be supportive of each of our strengths. She was more flexible in backbends so I utilized my strength in arm balances. Her smaller frame enabled me to showcase my strength in partner lifts where I supported her body weight as the base. Who cares who weighs more? We all have something to bring to the table.
Asking for help is a sign of strength, not of weakness
I was originally supposed to do this shoot by myself, but I thought Joy would be an asset and bring something unique to the table. Sometimes we fear letting people in, trusting others, and buying into friendships and partnerships after being burned and let down in the past. Keep an open mind and network, build relationships, and make time for people who are worth investing in. Be conscientious of who you spend your time with, what you fill your mind with in your spare time, and if you’re around people who inspire you to be the best version of yourself.
What is acro yoga….
Acro yoga focuses on acrobatics. It takes time, trust, and communication to calibrate to each partner. It is fluid, utilizes the strength and alignment of the base to effectively manipulate the flyer in the air, and is playful in nature. There are some technical details required and it is advised to take classes to ensure safe and effective movements.
Please do your due diligence when beginning a new fitness program and ensure your safety (like falling on your head) is priority one.
and whats the difference in partner yoga…..
Partner yoga uses counter balance and your partner’s weight to strengthen and stretch your body beyond what you can do alone. It is typically used in more of a restorative or static movement.
Check out Joy’s short (bless her less than 6 minute video blog of a whole day) but sweet vlog about our day prepping for an acro yoga photo shoot. Juice not included. But you might get a craving for juice and partner yoga. And a craving to see some of these photo shoot pics…..
Also, here’s Joy’s YouTube channel… she has a lot of great videos for helping with back pain, letting go, and her “Short and Sweet Tuesday’s” are a great way to start the day.

Her next video has behind the scenes of the shoot and a few sneak peaks of pictures. And a few epic fails as we improvise as we go…. I may or may not have fallen a few times. But we would never learn without those fails… and the accomplishments would seem less gratifying if they were easy.
Fall down seven times… stand up eight.
